The key issue here is that the answer will influence your decision about one key piece of additional hardware that your fledgling iPad recording studio is going to need. Do you need an audio interface, a MIDI interface or both? Audio, MIDI or both? Most modern multi-track recordings can consist of a combination of two different types of tracks; audio and MIDI. In many cases, these might involve a microphone placed in front of the sound to capture it, be that a vocalist, a guitar amp, a trumpet or a piece orchestra although that would actually be quite a challenge with a single mic!
These data can be used for all sorts of things but their main function is to hold MIDI note data. This allows you to play a part on your MIDI keyboard the notes can go to a MIDI synth at the same time so that you can hear what you are playing , record the MIDI notes to a MIDI track, perhaps edit them if your keyboard playing is a bad as mine and then re-play the track as many times as you like , sending the MIDI data back to a synth so you can hear the end result.
You could, of course, just record your synth sounds as audio on an audio track. However, this has some disadvantages compared to recording the MIDI. First, the audio data is a less efficient way of storing the performance it takes up more disk space. Second, if you make a mistake in the performance, the MIDI data can be very easily edited for example, adding new notes, adjusting the timing, changing the pitch but this is much more difficult to do with audio data although it can be done with software like Melodyne on a desktop computer.

Really surprised at how solid it is! The sensitivity settings are great, and the instructions are clear. Tried it out in 4track earlier, and it was pants. Basically that’s 4track at fault. Just had over gain, nasty. Lower settings weren’t good. But I do have the full vocalive software and it was extreme! Basically using the in and out adjuster on the settings you can fine tune the gain provided by the switch on the mic. WOuld have been nice to have had a greater amount of sound comeing through the headphones of my own voice when singing, but fine for sampling.
And quite copable with. The vocalive works really well, but you WILL want to upgrade if you hope to do any sort of multitracking as the monitor is necessary. The basic software is one track only. So it is one unit running right through from mic to connection. Would have felt nicer to have had soemthing juicier but then this is an ipod mic, not a stage mic really.

Cue in the best audio interfaces, and today we compiled some of our favorites to recommend you. What is an audio interface? Depending on how you listen to your audio, whether it be studio monitor speakers or studio headphones, most also have outputs to handle this gear in order for you to track and monitor your recordings. Some even provide MIDI ins and outs to allow your keyboards and other controllers to run more smoothly in the recording process and keep it all organized, too.
In our opinion, one of the biggest and most important parts of an audio interface is the help with the issue of latency. Not only as of today while you read this, but in the future as well. View gallery – 6 images Only a short time ago, if you’d asked me to describe a modern guitar effects unit, something like the GR from Boss would probably have come to mind. Now DigiTech have announced a new unit which offers the best of both worlds. Docking an iPad in the iPB Programmable Pedalboard allows guitarists to drag and drop a chain of effects using the accompanying app and then use the physical footswitches to control the action.
The fact that the iPad was practically everywhere at NAMM recently is testament to the power and versatility that music apps on such a device bring to players. With DigiTech’s new iPB Programmable Pedalboard , users actually slot Apple’s tablet into the built-in docking bay and then hook up the instrument and amp to the back of the unit itself.
DigiTech has also launched its own specially-designed iPB-Nexus app for iPad that gives iPB users the ability to design boards by drag and drop on the tablet screen and includes a MyTones library to store and organize presets. Players can choose to use other apps with the system but full functionality may suffer.
