Reply to Review I have camped in over 30 different Washington State campgrounds at this point, and this my 1 favorite. This is odd, since in two of my six visits, it rained so hard that it actually toppled trees and blocked both the entrance to and our exit from the Park. Despite this, we found it not only invigorating, but stayed dry and had the best camping experiences of our lives.

Mar 10, Updated: Jan 23, Comments: A rough, more primitive campground can teach you survival basics necessary to live off the surrounding landscape, but even the most luxurious camping trip has the power to create a bond with the Virginia outdoors that is unforgettable. The park is popular for primitive camping no showers, electricity, or stall bathrooms but offers extensive activities for visitors, including guided kayak trips, biking trails, and six miles of untouched beachfront for swimming and sunbathing.

Reachable only by foot, bicycle, or boat, the campgrounds have no public vehicular access. Camping reservations cannot be made on the same day, so make sure you call ahead of time. Campers should read all the details about the sites before arriving, as the area can be difficult for beginners and unprepared campers. There are primitive campsites located all along the trail for escalating levels of experience.

If you are looking a little more comfort, the Cliffview and Millrace sites have fire pits, lantern posts, and picnic tables. You can even rent canoes and bikes if you do not have your own equipment. The Double Shoals and Baker Island sites are for the truly rugged camper. These sites may not have any frills, but they allow the serious campers to focus on the surrounding natural landscape.

With no vehicular access to campsites and no showers or bathhouses, this Virginia campground is not for the faint of heart. There are many entrances to this park, as it winds through Grayson, Carroll, Wythe, Pulaski, and Galax along the New River for 39 miles.

We stayed in the newer Campground B a couple of years ago and liked it very much. Our stay this time was in the older Campground A, we like it too. Campground A has the only full hookup sites in the park and there are only six of them. Not only that, but it appeared to me that three of those were taken by long term campers.

The full hookup sites are all back in but between two one way roads in and out of the campground. The sites are level, reasonably spaced and concrete slabs. Some look like they would be okay for bigger rigs, but there are others that would be a tighter fit. Our Review — focused on Campground B — is here. Getting to Campground A is an experience all in itself. As I mentioned in my review, to get to this state park one turns off of Highway 61 onto State Park Road. You will wind your way past several buildings that are at the falling down stage right on a pot-hole filled road.

In a few minutes you come to a sign instructing you to turn left off of State Park Road if you want to go to Campground B and the main offices. The back in, full hookup sites are right there.
